How Boodo works

Five steps, in the same order every time, so a child always knows what comes next.

   Listen to the story

   The story is read aloud with each word highlighted as it is spoken, and the pages turn themselves. A child who cannot yet read a word still meets it.

2. 2

   Read it aloud

   One sentence appears at a time. Your child reads it out; Boodo listens and turns each word green as it is read correctly.

3. 3

   Practise the tricky words

   Words that were missed are gathered quietly — never corrected out loud mid-sentence — and practised at the end, on their own.

   Answer a few questions

   A short quiz on what happened in the story, so reading the words and understanding them stay connected.

   Watch the progress add up

   Stars, badges and a reading streak. A story counts as finished only when your child has listened, read, practised and passed.

What Boodo does

Everything below is in the app today.

• Listens while your child reads

  Speech recognition follows along word by word and marks what was read correctly. A missed word is noted, never announced.

• Never records your child

  Words are recognised, compared with the story, and the audio is discarded immediately. Boodo stores no recordings and uploads none.

• Works with no internet

  Eighty-two stories and every illustration are inside the app from the moment it is installed. No download to wait through and no account to make.

• Keeps itself up to date

  When there is a connection, new stories arrive in the background. A grown-up can restrict that to Wi-Fi.

• Practice built from your child's own reading

  The practice list is not a fixed set of words. It is the words that particular child found hard, in that particular story.

• Comprehension quizzes

  Each story ends with questions about what happened, so decoding and understanding are both part of finishing.

• Progress worth showing

  Stars, ten badges, reading streaks and a record of every story finished, kept per child.

• Grown-up settings behind a gate

  Settings, downloads and school connection sit behind a question a young child cannot answer.

• Optional school connection

  If a school gives you a code, a tablet can report that child's reading to their teacher. It is off until an adult turns it on.

Common questions

Is Boodo free?

Yes. There are no in-app purchases, no subscription, no locked stories and no advertising. Every child using Boodo gets all of it.

Does Boodo record my child's voice?

No. When your child reads aloud, the words are recognised, compared with the story, and the audio is discarded immediately. Boodo never stores or uploads a recording.

Does Boodo work without internet?

Yes. Eighty-two stories and every illustration are inside the app when you install it, so it works on a plane, in a car, and in a home with no broadband. When there is a connection, new stories arrive in the background.

What age is Boodo for?

Boodo is designed for children aged about four to ten.

Does my child need an account?

No. Children do not create accounts. A profile is made on the device and the reading history stays there unless a school has connected the tablet.

How do I connect Boodo to my child's school?

A school gives you a short code. Open the grown-up settings, turn on the school option and type the code in once. It is optional — everything else works without it.

Which devices does Boodo run on?

iPhone and iPad running iOS 18 or later, and Android phones and tablets running Android 8 or later.
